Description
The first two covered bridges over the Kennebec River in Skowhegan were built in 1809. For the next 75 years, the builders were repaid for their investment by collecting tolls from users.
During that period of time, a sucession of toll-keepers lived, with their families, in this smal house situated on Skowhegan Island between the two bridges. The toll keeper had a gate that kept travelers from crossing at night or when he was unavailable to collect tolls. Many amusing stories have been told about the toll-keepers struggles to collect tolls 24 hours a day.
