James Otis, the pen name of James Otis Kaler of South Portland, wrote Toby Tyler: or ten weeks with a circus, published in 1881. The edition shown was published in 1937. Everett Shinn was the illustrator.
Toby was admired for his spunk and the books were quite popular in the 1880s.
