Description
Francis Edgar (F.E.) Stanley (1849-1918), center, stands among other ferry passengers on the Squirrel Island pier, circa 1912. Stanley, born in Kingfield, Maine, became a successful artist, photographer, inventor and businessman in the Lewiston/Auburn area. Many of Stanley's clients and friends were prominent members of the Lewiston/Auburn community, who had established the summer colony on Squirrel Island in Boothbay Harbor in the 1870s. In partnership with his twin brother, Freelan Oscar (F.O.) Stanley, F.E. Stanley established the Stanley Dry Plate Company (makers of photographic dry plates) and the Stanley Motor Carriage Company (makers of Stanley steam cars). The Stanley Brothers also invented and produced gas illumination equipment, an artists' airbrush, early x-ray apparatus, and steam railcars, and were both photographers and violin makers. F.E. Stanley built his own summer home on Squirrel Island in 1908, and became active in many community projects on the island, including building a new public dock and breakwater.
