Description
A crowd of spectators, many with parasols, assemble at courtside for a tennis tournament at Squirrel Island, circa 1905.
The building behind the courts to the left is the Squirrel Island Chapel (built in 1879); behind is the Casino (built in 1887 or 1889, burned in 1965); and to the right is the Squirrel Island Library (built in 1904).
Between the buildings and around the courts can be seen the island's elaborate network of boardwalks, which (as seen here) also doubled as spectator seating.
