Description
While her partner William Penn Whitehouse (forecourt right) looks on, Florence "Tossie" Hayes (backcourt right) sends a volley towards her opponent, Margaret "Peg" Gruener (forecourt left) during a tennis match on Squirrel Island, circa 1911. Gruener's partner, Raymond Stanley (not visible in photo) records that they lost the match.
Up on the hillside beyond the tennis courts is a large cottage (left) which belonged to the Stanley family. Called "Sunny Haven," it was built in 1908 and destroyed in a row fire in 1932.
