Description
A group of boys race for a loose watermelon as part of the organized games of Fete Week, a late summer celebration of the community on Squirrel Island, circa 1907.
The local rules for this event called for a designated individual to spin or roll a watermelon before a pack of runners (started from the opposite end of the course) who would attempt to gain possession of the watermelon much like recovering a loose ball in football or rugby.
The winner was the one who wound up on top of the watermelon, or what was left of it. Traditionally this event was only contested by boys.
