Description
Mary E. Dupee, a nurse serving in Washington, D.C., and Virginia during the Civil War wrote to Ellen Usher Bacon in Maine to report on the nurses' activities and their move to City Point, Virginia.
Dupee reported that when she and Rebecca Usher (Bacon's sister) arrived, all housing was taken. They found a "room in a house kept by colored people," where all the other boarders were men. She wrote, "The landlady consented to furnish us with meals."
She noted that they saw some of Sherman's army as well as Sheridan's Cavalry. She also praised the Maine Camp Hospital Association, which employed a number of the nurses in the field.
