Description
Water gushes from the canal outlet beneath the Libbey Mill, which sits along the Androscoggin River. The Great Falls are in the background. The canals provide hydro power to run the mill equipment. The Libbey Mill, originally known as the Lincoln Mill, was built in 1845. In 1863, it's bell tower was incorporated into Lewiston's city seal.
The Libbey Mill was partially destroyed by fire in 1999, then fully torn down in 2007. In addition to wool and cotton, the Libbey Mill produced acrylic blankets starting in the 1960s until the operations were moved to South Carolina in 1991.
