Description
Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church is one of Lewiston's most famous landmarks. Construction was started on the Basilica on February 22, 1906 and was completed July 18, 1936. It is the oldest parish for French-speaking Catholics in the diocese of Portland. The church was placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the Federal Department of the Interior on July 14th, 1983. At that time, it was the second largest church in New England. For the first 30 years of its existence, only the "lower church" was available for services. Today, masses are held in both the lower and upper church.
