Description
Roak Block--so named for Jacob Roak, one of the nine financiers who constructed a four-story brick-building at this location--was built in 1871 to house both retail businesses and a shoe mill. Immediately setting up shop were Dingley & Foss Shoes and Wise & Cooper Shoes so the block quickly became known as the "cradle of the Auburn shoe industry."
At the time the photograph was taken, the businesses on the block were the Atlantic Refrigeration Co. and Lucky "7" Pizza.
