Contributed by Maine Central Institute
Description
This is a handwritten letter of recommendation from the Principal of Maine Central Institute (MCI), Kingsbury Batchelder, for Allie N. Pike, an MCI graduate of the class of 1879. The letter was written April 14, 1884, nearly five years after she graduated.
The Maine Central Institute was founded in 1866 by Rev. Oren B. Cheney, an abolitionist who founded Bates College in nearby Lewiston. The first building, the Institute Building (Founders Hall), was completed in 1869 and served as the primary campus building until 1958. Since then the school has expanded on many occasions. As of 2013 is still in operation and serves as a co-educational independent boarding school.
