Description

Samuel Tarbox wrote this deed to Moses Jewett II for Pew No. 60 in the Westport Island Meeting House, for the consideration of $24.75. Jewett was a landowner on the island. The Meeting House was used by Baptists and Methodists on alternate Sundays from around 1828 until 1864.

Church members purchased pews for the exclusive use of their families. The money raised from the pew deeds funded maintenance and improvements to the church.

Samuel Tarbox was the first appointed First Selectman when Westport was incorporated in 1828. He was also a Justice of the Peace, and a member of a committee appointed to sell pews in the Meeting House, along with Westbrook Greenleaf, Ebenezer Greenleaf, James McCarty, Thomas Hodgdon III, and Cornelius Tarbox.
