Contributed by Cary Memorial Library in Wayne
Description
This bookplate was designed by the noted artist, illustrator and writer Rockwell Kent (1882-1971). It was created for his mother's sister, his "Auntie Jo," who was an artist herself.
In addition to the owner's name, the design shows sunlight pouring into an open window onto several volumes resting on a windowsill. A notable aspect of the bookplate is the text, illustrative of the common practice of including inspirational thoughts as part of bookplate designs. The text is a selection from the poem "Personal Talk" by William Wordsworth.
The text reads:
Dreams, books, are each a world; and books, we know,
Are a substantial world both pure and good;
Round these, with tendrils strong as flesh and blood,
Our pastime and our happiness will grow.
The bookplate is included in a collection created by Elizabeth Hyatt in honor of Annie Louise Cary (1841-1921), noted concert and opera singer. The collection was donated to the Cary Memorial Library in Wayne, birthplace of Annie Louise Cary.
