Description
James Gillespie Blaine (1830-1893), a native of West Brownsville, Pennsylvania, served in the Maine House of Representatives from 1859-1862, then was in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1863 to 1876 and the U.S. Senate from 1876-1881.
Blaine is best as Speaker of the House from 1869 to 1875 and Secretary of State in 1881 and 1889-1892. He was a popular statesman and was a candidate for President from the Republican Party in 1884.
