Description
James A. Garfield (1831-1881) served as the 20th United States President. From Ohio, he served in the Civil War achieving the rank of Brigadier General. He was a Republican Congressman for many years and elected President in 1881. Garfield met an untimely end when an embittered lawyer shot him. Garfield died of his wounds two months later. This portrait photograph is part of a scrapbook of the Maine State Legislature, 1880.
