Description
John P. Sheahan of Dennysville, a 2nd lieutenant in Co. E of the 31st Maine Infantry, wrote to his father contrasting what his father probably was doing on the sabbath and what soldiers outside of Petersburg were doing.
Sheahan, who had served in the 1st Maine Cavalry for almost two years, had recently received a commission in the 31st Maine, the same company his two younger brothers, Ned and Henry, joined. An older brother, William, was killed at Rappahannock Station in November 1863.
Sheahan also wrote about his plans to attend medical school after the war.
