Description
Thomas J. Burgess was thirty years old when, on August 11, 1863, he received this letter from the Provost Marshall, A. D. Bean, notifying him that he had been drafted for a three year enlistment. Just three days later, on August 14, following his physical examination he was found to be unfit for duty and exempted due to an injured trochanter major (bad hip).
Burgess was a printer by trade and published the Evening Bulletin, daily telegraph dispatches from the war, in 1862. His two younger brothers, George and William, also served during the war.
