Description
This design shows an owl perched on a globe, surrounded by an oil lamp and several volumes. One of the books, "Hamlet", has been pierced by a sword.
Besides the name "Thomas J. Barbour" and "Ex Libris," additional text illlustrates a book owner's scorn for the borrower who fails to return a volume: "Thrice cursed be he who borroweth and returneth not."
Also appearing is the artist's name, Gordon Ross.
Elizabeth Mast Hyatt compiled the bookplate collection in honor of Annie Louise Cary (1841-1921), famed opera and concert singer. Cary was born in Wayne, and the 1938 library was named the Cary Memorial Library.
