Description
William Austin Burgess wrote home to his younger brother Albert Cargill on July 15, 1864 to tell his family about the serious chest wound he had just received. William enlisted with the 59th Massachusetts Infantry, Co. D on February 9, 1864. He was with his regiment at the Siege of Petersburg when he was shot by a Rebel sharpshooter.
At the time he wrote this letter he was being tended to at City Point, Virginia. William was later moved to Satterlee Hospital, outside of Philadelphia, where he died on August 15, 1864.
