Contributed by Cary Memorial Library in Wayne
Description
Elizabeth Mast Hyatt compiled an extensive bookplate collection in the 1920s and 1930s to honor Annie Louise Cary (1841-1921), famed opera and concert singer. This bookplate is one of several that Bowdoin College sent to Hyatt. It includes the college sun seal and the college motto, "Ut Aquila Versus Coelum" (As an eagle towards the sky), and the words "Longfellow Library".
In his 1925 letter to Hyatt, college president Kenneth C. M. Sills stated, "Bowdoin has an interest in Anna Louise Cary as on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the graduation of Longfellow's class when the poet was here she was the soloist at the Commencement concert. She bequeathed to the College in her will the very excellent portrait of Longfellow by Healey."
Hyatt was involved in planning for a library to be built in Wayne, Annie Louise Cary's birthplace. The library was dedicated in 1939 as the Cary Memorial Library, and some years later the bookplate collection became part of the library's collections.
