Doris and Paul Holmes, Holmes' Market, Main Street, Dixfield, ca. 1950

Contributed by Dixfield Historical Society

Description

Arriving in Dixfield around 1943, Paul Holmes worked for the local A&P Market. In 1945 he and his wife Doris purchased the Charles Stanley & Sons Market right in the center of town facing the Main and Weld Street intersection. The team effort had Paul supervising the groceries and meat, and Doris handling the bookeeping end of the business, and both waiting on customers. They lived in the apartment above the store with their two children Judy and Jon. They are shown here on the front steps of Holmes' Market and the dog was just visiting. Cake flour can be seen stacked in the window display.

Holmes Market became well known in the area, especially for its selection of quality meats. Holmes' Market joined the IGA grocery co-op and later became an AG store. Doris and Paul served the Dixfield community for over 30 years, when they turned the business over to their son Jon and his wife Susan in 1976.
