Description
This small diner, located on Main Street, Dixfield, was built on to the front of the brick Welch family home somewhere around 1947. The Ludden Memorial Library can be seen just to the left. The Hi Spot was founded by Stan Horne following his return from World War 2 and where he would meet his bride, Kate Welch.
Somewhat later Merrill Horne became the proprietor. The diner was a popular morning coffee and donut stop as the post office was located just across the street. It also offered soda fountain service. In 1960, this propertery was acquired by the Town of Dixfield with funds left to the town in the Hortense Torrey will. Following demolition, a new municipal building was built that houses the Town Office and Post Office.
One Hi Spot speciality was the "Spudnut," a raised and glazed donut made out of potato dough. In 2013,
Towle's Corner Kitchen, on the corner of Weld and Main Streets, makes these donuts every weekend in honor of the "Dixfield Spudnut."
