Iphigene Ochs and Arthur Hays Sulzberger bookplate, 1928

Contributed by Cary Memorial Library in Wayne

Description

Iphigene Ochs was the daughter of Adolph Ochs, publisher of the New York Times. Her husband, Arthur Sulzberger, worked at the Times, and became publisher after his father-in-law's death in 1935.

This bookplate is a striking example of the strong modernist style of artist Rockwell Kent. Kent spent some years painting the landscapes of Monhegan Island, beginning in 1905. He is known not only for his paintings, but for the books he wrote and illustrated, and for the more than 160 bookplates he designed over his long artistic career.

Elizabeth Mast Hyatt compiled a bookplate collection in honor of noted opera and concert singer Annie Louise Cary (1841-1921), who was born in Wayne. Hyatt was also involved in the planning for a library, which was built in 1938 and named the Cary Memorial Library.
