Margaret and Ralph Pulitzer bookplate, 1928

Contributed by Cary Memorial Library in Wayne

Description

Ralph Pulitzer was the son of Joseph Pulitzer, prominent publisher of the New York World.

When Joseph retired, Ralph succeeded him as publisher. In 1928, Ralph Pulitzer married for the second time, to Margaret Leech. Artist Rockwell Kent designed this bookplate as a gift in celebration of their marriage.

Rockwell Kent (1882-1971) was a noted painter, printmaker, writer and illustrator, who designed over 160 bookplates during the course of his career.

Elizabeth Mast Hyatt built an extensive bookplate collection during the 1920s and 1930s in honor of famed opera and concert singer Annie Louise Cary (1841-1921). Cary was born in the town of Wayne, and in 1938 a library was built there and named the Cary Memorial Library.

Hyatt, a summer resident of Wayne, was involved in the planning for the new library, and subsequently donated the bookplate collection to the library.
