Description
William Austin Burgess wrote to his older, married sister, Harriet B. Towne on July 9, 1864 to tell her how he was faring, about camp life and in which engagements with the enemy he had fought. William enlisted with the 59th Massachusetts Infantry, Co. D on February 9, 1864. On August 15, 1864, he died from wounds received less than one week after this letter was written.
