Description
Sgt. Peter P. Hazen wrote to Mrs. Harriet Burgess Towne on August 15, 1864 to describe the details of her brother William A. Burgess' death earlier that day.
Hazen was a fellow patient at Satterlee Hospital, Ward E, outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was recovering from facial wounds he received at the Battle of Gettysburg. He had befriended her brother and felt the need to assure his family that William had received the greatest care from the Sisters of Charity, just as a mother, wife, or sister would have done.
