Description
Louise Titcomb, a nurse at the U.S. General Hospital in Annapolis, Maryland, wrote to fellow Civil War nurse Rebecca Usher, with whom she had worked at several hospitals, describing the Annapolis hospital and the needs of the soldiers at the facility who had been Confederate prisoners of war.
Usher was at home in Hollis at the time of the letter, but later went back to nursing work with soldiers.
Titcomb (1823-1905) related a story about a Kentucky man at the hospital who had been nearly drowned by Confederate soldiers, who assumed he was dead. He and others formed their own company to fight the Rebels.
Titcomb, of Portland, served at Chester, Pennsylvania, in 1862 and 1863, then went to the hospital at Annapolis, where she worked until May 1865. She and Usher were friends.
