Description
Harriet Burgess Towne was the older, married sister of William A. Burgess who was serving with the 59th Massachusetts Infantry during the Civil War. She received a letter from him dated July 9, 1864 in which he tells her of camp life and the battles which he has fought in. The first line reads "Give Willie a kiss from me."
This photograph shows Harriet or "Hattie," as she was called by her brother, with her young son William R. Towne.
