Lieutenant Alfred E. Nickerson letter, Swanville, 1862

Description

Lieutenant Alfred Emery Nickerson was born in Swanville. He enlisted with the 19th Maine Infantry Volunteers, Co. E, on July 16, 1862 and mustered out of service on May 31, 1865. He fought at many of the major battles, including Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, and Appomattox.

In this letter to his wife, he mentions his brother Andrew, who also was a soldier in the same regiment.

At age 73, Alfred was one of the few remaining veterans from Waldo County to attend the Battle of Gettysburg semi-centennial exercises in July, 1913.
