Contributed by Cary Memorial Library in Wayne
Description
In 1924, Mexican artist Miguel Covarrubias went to New York, where he produced many drawings in the jazz clubs of Harlem and also designed stage sets and costumes for the theater. After returning to Mexico, he became a self-taught anthropologist, contributing to the study of the Olmec culture.
He created this art deco style bookplate for publisher Donald S. Friede of Chicago. It became part of the bookplate collection created by Elizabeth Mast Hyatt, summer resident of Wayne, in honor of opera and concert singer Annie Louise Cary (1841-1921), who was born in Wayne. Hyatt was also involved in the planning for a library, which was dedicated in 1939 as the Cary Memorial Library.
