Schooner 'Freeman,' Mill Cove in Boothbay Harbor, ca. 1937

Description

This image shows the four-masted schooner Freeman'when she was laid up at Mill Cove in Boothbay Harbor during the mid 1930s.

This schooner was built in Rockland in 1919 and was named after Richard Freeman of Boston. Her gross tonnage was 1,007 and she was 192 feet in length.

The Freeman spent her active life along the Atlantic seaboard freighting coal and lumber. Her windjammer days ended in 1929, and she was then laid up for a number of years at Mill Cove.

In 1940 she became a barge operating from Halifax, Nova Scotia. She continued service through 1947 and then was scuttled off Halifax.
