Description

Elvin J. Maxwell was born in Windham about 1838. Very little is known about his parents.

He lived with different Windham families (Jackson and White) until he was old enough to enlist in the Civil War on December 10, 1861 as a sergeant in Co. D of the 15th Maine Infantry.

After the death of his first wife, Abigail Jackson, whom he married in Maine, Maxwell married Zoe Grant. He met her along the Gulf Coast when he served there as a captain in the 96th Infantry Regiment U.S. Colored Troops.

He died in 1921 in Pascagoula, Mississippi.
