Description
Mary Elise Fellows White (1873-1953), a native of Skowhegan, was a violin prodigy. She studied at the New England Conservatory and with Franz Kneisel in Boston starting at age 9, and in Vienna with Jakob Grun starting at age 18.
When she returned to the U.S., she taught violin and went on a year-long performance tour with two other young musicians. In 1898, she married Bruce White, a mine owner in British Columbia. They had two sons.
White returned to Skowhegan with her sons in 1907. She continued to play the violin and in 1937 and 1942, she recorded about a dozen songs, including Etude-Caprice, which she wrote.
