Contributed by Cary Memorial Library in Wayne
Description
Winward Prescott was an avid collector of and writer about bookplates. This bookplate uses the familiar image of a skull to suggest the idea of mortality. The skull rests on a book with the text "Book Plate Literature - Prescott."
Prescott had written a book with a similar title in 1914. Surrounding the central image are rough sketches representing a variety of bookplates. The initials ANM and date 1912 appear at the bottom.
Elizabeth Mast Hyatt included this bookplate in her collection, which was assembled in honor of Annie Louise Cary (1841-1921), a noted opera and concert singer who was born in Wayne.
The present library, built in 1938, was named the Cary Memorial Library, and the bookplate collection was subsequently added to the library's collections.
