Description
A. L. Harwood Jr.'s bookplate depicts a jumping fish, fishing rods, a partridge, a hunting dog, guns and a canoe paddle. Bookplate designers often strove to reflect the interests of their patrons, as shown here.
The artist's name, Will Simmons, appears in the lower right.
This bookplate is part of the collection created by Elizabeth Mast Hyatt in the 1920s and 1930s to honor famed opera and concert singer Annie Louise Cary (1841-1921). Hyatt was a summer resident of Wayne, where Cary was born. In 1938 a library was built in the town and named the Cary Memorial Library. The bookplate collection was later donated to the library.
