Lower Weld Street, Dixfield, ca. 1940

Contributed by Dixfield Historical Society

Description

This wintry photo shows lower Weld Street in the 1940s. The tall building to the left is Towle's Hardware, followed by the Bluebird Restaurant, and then the rear of the Ione Harlow Building which actually fronts Main Street. None of these buildings remain in 2014.

The Ione Harlow building was the home of Miss Harlow's Antique shop as well as various other enterprises over a span of fifty plus years. The building was razed in 1950 to make way for a gas station. The Bluebird Restaurant was originally the Blue Door gift shop owned by Marion Tribou. Bob and Grace Ames bought the building in the 1940s and operated the Bluebird Restaurant into the 1970s when the building was purchased and removed for added space for Towle's Hardware. The original hardware building was replaced by a new modern facility in 2008 as Towle's Hardware continues to serve the Dixfield community since 1911.
