PASS Alarm, Waldoboro, ca. 1980

Contributed by Waldoboro Fire Department

Description

The Personal Alert Safety System (PASS) is utilized by members of the Waldboboro Fire Department, manually turned on upon entering a burning structure. If a firefighter is stationary for more than thirty seconds, the device will automatically sound an audible alarm. If a firefighter becomes trapped, he could manually activate the device. In use since the 1980s, the device was attached to the Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). This style has been replaced in recent years by a new PASS incorporated into the construction of the SCBA.
