Hettie Gray Baker bookplate, ca. 1925

Contributed by Cary Memorial Library in Wayne

Description

This bookplate is an example of the rebus style, in which the image (of a person baking bread) represents the last name of the owner. Hettie Gray Baker had a long career in the motion picture industry. She worked as a film editor and censor at 20th Century Fox from 1916 to the early 1950s. She was also an avid bookplate collector, with many plates coming from celebrities.

During the 1920s and 1930s Elizabeth Mast Hyatt built a substantial bookplate collection in honor of famed opera and concert singer Annie Louise Cary (1841-1921), who was born in Wayne. Hyatt was also involved with the plans for a new library, which was built in Wayne in 1938 and named the Cary Memorial Library. The bookplate collection, which includes Baker's plate, was eventually donated to the library.
