Description
William Fowler Hopson (1849-1935) was a distinguished American painter and engraver of bookplates. This example of his work shows a man seated in a chair while reading in a peaceful woodland setting, with the spire of a church in the distance and shelves of books to the side.
The text includes the owner's name, the words "ex libris," and the date, 1910. Also appearing at the top of the plate is a quotation from Shakespeare's "As You Like It"
"Tongues in trees,
Books in the running brooks,
Sermons in stones,
And good in everything."
Elizabeth Mast Hyatt collected a large number of bookplates during the 1920s and 1930s in honor of Annie Louise Cary (1841-1921), famed opera and concert singer, who was born in Wayne. Hyatt, a summer resident of Wayne, was involved in the planning for a library, which was dedicated in 1939 as the Cary Memorial Library. The bookplate collection was subsequently added to the library's holdings.
