Description
Ezekiel Day of Portland wrote to his daughter Lucretia, who lived in New York City with her husband, Kiah B. Sewall, urging them to leave New York and live with Day and his family in Portland.
Day referred to Sewall's apparent failure to get established in business in New York and expenses the young couple would save if they returned to Portland and lived with the family. He described the winter weather and what the family was doing.
Lucretia Day married Kiah Sewall, a native of Edgecomb, on in May 1836.
The Panic of 1837, caused in part by land speculation, probably contributed to Sewall's financial problems. He had also been involved in speculation in Portland after he graduated from Bowdoin College in 1829 and incurred debt in those dealings.
