K.B. Sewall to wife on separation, New York, 1837

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Kiah B. Sewall, who had been living in New York without his wife since April 1837, wrote to her in Portland in October, lamenting their separation.

Lucretia Day Sewall was living with her parents, Ezekiel and Eunice Day, and had given birth to their first child, a daughter, in August.

Kiah Sewall wrote, "I think we ought to to live apart any longer. Still I can not urge your coming here when I am so destitute as your parents know - & it would be much to my disadvantage to come to Portland till there is some further change in my affairs."

He added, "I fear you think I care little about you. I have appeared so calm on the subject, but it is far otherwise, it is my greatest unhappiness that we are separated & outweighs altogether my business embarrassments."

"Time will bring changes," he wrote.
