Arthur S. Allen Jr. bookplate, 1928

Contributed by Cary Memorial Library in Wayne

Description

In 1929, Arthur S. Allen, Jr. sailed from Nova Scotia to Greenland with two crew members, one of them the artist Rockwell Kent. After encountering difficult weather, their ship crashed on rocks and sank, but all men survived unharmed. This bookplate features a globe and a drafting compass, suggestive of Allen's adventurous nature and studies of naval architecture. Tragically, young Allen was killed by a streetcar soon after returning to New York.

The style of this bookplate is distinctly Kent's. Over the course of his long artistic career, he designed over 160 bookplates. His ties to Maine were forged during a number of years spent painting on Monhegan Island.

The bookplate is part of a collection created by Elizabeth Mast Hyatt in the 1920s and 1930s in memory of Annie Louise Cary (1841-1921), a world-famous opera and concert singer who was born in Wayne, Maine.
Hyatt, a summer resident of Wayne, was involved in the planning for a library, which was dedicated in 1939 as the Cary Memorial Library. The bookplates eventually became a part of the library collections.
