Description
In the late 1700s, a requirement for early settlers of Holmantown (incorporated as Dixfield in 1803) was to clear and plant twenty acres and fifty living apple trees. This gave rise to a thriving apple industry in the Dixfield Common and East Dixfield area in the 1800s and early 1900s. Apple trees lined the hills. Manufacturing apple barrels and boxes was also big business for East Dixfield. Orchardist Greenleaf Walton is shown here with his fall harvest around 1890.
