Description
Kiah B. Sewall (1807-1865), who was living in New York as he attempted to resolve debts and to study to be a lawyer, wrote to his wife, Lucretia Day Sewall (1813-1897), to thank her for presents he received for his 31st birthday.
The couple had a daughter, Eunice, who was born in Portland in August 1837 and who Sewall had not yet seen. In this letter, as in others he wrote, he gave his wife child-rearing advice, often cautioning her not to hold the child too much or play with her too much as she might become spoiled.
Sewall also wrote about his business prospects, about which he was somewhat optimistic, and about his desire to set up housekeeping with Lucretia. His lack of funds prevented that, he wrote.
