Description
Kiah Bayley Sewall (1807-1865) wrote from New York to his wife, Lucretia Day Sewall, in Portland about his travel plans.
Sewall, who had been ill with lung problems, was advised to go to Florida or Cuba for the winter. He borrowed money from Lucretia's father, Ezekiel Day, to travel to West Florida. He wrote that he planned to travel on the brig Calvin or the Cotton Planter to Mobile, and then go on to Florida.
The couple had been separated for about two years. Sewall was in New York to settle debts and study law and Lucretia returned to her parents' house in Portland where their first child, Eunice, was born in August 1837. Sewall had not yet seen his daughter.
