K.B. Sewall on brig "Calvin," New York, 1839

Description

Kiah B. Sewall, aboard the brig Calvin awaiting departure from New York to Mobile, Alabama, wrote to his wife, Lucretia, in Portland to describe the ship and those aboard.

Sewall was going South for the winter because of ill health. He and Lucretia had lived apart for about two years because of his financial problems. She and the couple's 18-month-old daughter were living with Lucretia's parents, Ezekiel and Eunice Day.

Sewall was in debt due to land speculation failures. He was studying to be a lawyer. They married in May 1836 and lived in New York together until she became pregnant and his financial difficulties made it difficult for them to live together.

Sewall's sister-in-law had sailed for Mobile a week earlier and he expected to see her there.
