Description
Lucretia Sewall (1845-1873), the daughter of Lucretia and Kiah Sewall, wrote from Mobile, Alabama, to her brother, Somers Sewall (1843-1867) in Maine. The siblings had not seen each other in three years, separated by the Civil War.
Lucretia wrote of the family's anxiety to see their father, who had escaped from Mobile in August 1864 to avoid service with the Confederate army. With the war ended, they expected him to return. Somers Sewall had been in Maine, going to school.
Lucretia, known as "Kitty," wrote that she was conflicted about the end of the war because she was a Confederate sympathizer, the only one in the family, which had deep roots in Maine.
Her father began practicing law in Mobile in 1839. Lucretia and eight of her nine siblings were born there. The family retained ties in Maine, especially with her mother's family, and some of the children returned to Maine for schooling.
