Description
This image shows the fire that grew inside of the Diamond National lumberyard on April 20th, 1963. This was exactly one month from fire that had consumed the Grafton Lumber mill. Wind forced flames to spread across to Hooper Street. It required the assistance of thirteen communities and 300 individual firemen to ensure that the fire did not continue past Hooper Street on to Elm Street. The wood of the lumberyard fed the fire so well that the intense heat scorched thousands of feet of fire hose. Following the fire, a special city council meeting was called in Biddeford to address the hose shortage.
