Description
The "Westport Ferry" is pictured carrying a dump truck across the Back River from Westport Island to Wiscasset. Westport Island is visible in the background.
The ferry was a scow guided by a cable that ran along the bottom of the Back River. The ferry traveled east/west against a north/south tide. Ferry operators could move the scow along the cable by hand or enlist the power of a small motor boat, which in this picture is visible alongside the ferry.
