Kiah Sewall draft of will, Mobile, 1852

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Kiah B. Sewall (1807-1865) wrote a draft of his will on August 14, 1852. It specifies that all his personal and real property go to his wife, Lucretia Day Sewall, and that she be the executrix of his estate.

Sewall, a native of Edgecomb, and his wife, a native of Portland, had lived in Mobile since 1839. Sewall was a lawyer and involved in real estate. The will specifies the properties he owned or co-owned and the debts due on each of them.

The signed will, dated two days later, leaves out details of his business interests.

Sewall, an 1829 graduate of Bowdoin College, had gotten into debt in land speculation in Maine in the early 1830s. He studied law in New York before moving to Mobile because of health issues.
